SUMMER SCHOOL WEEK 1

Awesome first week of my second class for Summer Session A!!  (Wondering why I'm only mentioning second class..cause my first class is on hold till July) I have learned so much and it is starting to make me think about possibly being certified in Special Education. There are Graduate students in our class that are pursuing their Master's Degree in SPED and they have shared what they have experienced in their classroom. This week has made me realize that teaching is something that I want to do and I am ready to take on the challenges that may come my way. I have such a strong passion for it.

I was also happy to share some new information with one of my group-mates (and I'll share with you as well). This was information she found helpful and could use in future classes. The first one is the citation website that you can enter the ISBN number of the book and it will cite it for you in MLA or APA format. The site is:  www.citationmachine.net...click on the link and check it out!! I found it to be very easy and helpful when citing a book. The second one was the use of Google Docs. We were able to complete one of our assignments together online in one document using Google Docs. You're going to have to explore this one yourself and maybe you could find a youtube video on it. This program allows you to create simple documents, spreadsheets, presentations and tables online and share with a group of people to edit or simply view...everyone must have a gmail account in order to use this.

Now I'm studying for Quiz 1 tomorrow, preparing for a presentation that is to take place at the end of the week, and a brochure due the following Monday. Two more weeks for this class, then its a couple days break, and Summer Session C begins!! Oh school... I <3 U too much!!!

SY 2011- 2012 Catechist

I was only a Catechist for half the school year of 2011-2012 and I was still given this Certificate of Appreciation for my service. I absolutely love sharing the knowledge of my faith and my love for God with children. Being a catechist has allowed me to grow as a teacher and to gain the experience in order to succeed in my career.

What's Good In Technology Tools

FIREFOX

This is the new web browser that everyone should be using. If you  are still stuck on internet explorer, its time for you to check out Firefox. It is so much faster and safer. You can add on tabs and delete them easily. It  allows you to save passwords, so that it is easy to log in to a frequently visited site. I like how when your computer shuts down for no reason it allows you to restore your previous session.

 MOODLE

Allows me to view all classes that are using moodle. I can easily switch from one class to another. It keeps me informed of when class assignments are due. I like the little calendar that highlights a particular date of when an assignment is due. It lets me know to check and stay on task therefore I am able to plan out when I will have to turn in my assignments. Moodle is a great tool for all students to use.

GOOGLE APPS

I would definitely recommend anyone to use Google Apps. I am able to access my blog directly through the email. The calendar is so convenient, I am able to connect to my iphone so that I can include all events in one calendar on my phone. The google documents makes group meetings so convenient, my group members and I are able to place all information on one document and edit together.

LIVEBINDERS

This site allows gives you the opportunity to share resources with others. It allows you to create tabs and subtabs so you can organize your resources conveniently. This site would be useful for teachers to   share different various resources. You are able to view other binders
that are public and made by other people.

WEEBLY
Weebly is a very easy to use website creator. There are many themes that you can choose from. It is easy to navigate through the site in order to create your page. It also allows you to easily share this site with different people and its easy for them to view. There aren't too many special graphics that you can place on your page. It is possible to         create a website for free but, there are some multimedia features that
are not available unless you purchase an upgrade.

 WIX

Wix is recommended for the patient few. When I first created a website,  I did begin with trying out Wix,  and I found it to be lagging. I had to use Microsoft Word to first type out what I wanted on the site and then had to copy and paste onto Wix. When I tried adding some graphics it took awhile to upload.  Although, It is easy to navigate through the website. There are many graphics that you are able to add to your website, I beleive more than compared to another I used. There
are also many unique themes that can be used.

EDMODO

Edmodo is awesome social networking for learning. Teachers are able to create a classroom online. You are able to create a profile and can add your fellow classmates.  Teachers can post upcoming events and assignments.  Students are able to interact with the teacher and other classmates as well. Teachers are able to take polls and post surveys that students can participate in. It is safe and secure, once a student is invited they are given a code to log into the group that was created by
the teacher. I would definitely recommend this site for teacher's of high
 school students.

VOKI

One of my favorite technology tools this semester was, Voki. It is so amazing!! There were a couple times when I used to let my professor know I was going to be absent from class. It allows you to create a character of your own, type in a message, and it speaks for you. You're able to change the character's voice, whether it be male or female, and language you wish for it to speak. I would recommend this for students with disabilities to use. Voki would give a voice for students that are unable to talk.

Discovering the Digital World Safely

Computers continue to evolve rapidly and in the end its how we use it. As Bill Gates once said, “I think it's fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we've ever created. They're tools of communication, they're tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user.” We must always take heed to the dangers that using computer may come with. Digital safety is a common practice that most of us should be informed and aware of when using the world wide web. It is often common for most of us to forget about the dangers of the internet. The fact that someone could be behind a computer simply does not mean that they are safe.
The digital safety topics that were presented did appeal to me. One topic that was especially important was, Pharming and Phishing.  I thought it was interesting to know that people can get into your computer and just pull information based on what you provide on certain sites. I think that this would be a good presentation to give to high school students. It would inform them to be careful about the information that they put on certain sites.
The presentation on digital safety and privacy was more tailored for students in the elementary grade levels. The group gave a lot of information on what students in that grade level should be aware of and what parents should watch out for. The group could have also included some common sense rules for parents and how they should model digital safety for their children (Perle, 2009). In any case, I believe that parents should always be monitoring their child when they are online.
The topic that my group presented on was, textual harassment and sexting. I thought that the laws for doing any of these weren’t that strict. I learned that it is a common thing among students and some of them do it without realizing the dangers of it.
The fair use practices and copyright issues was also a great topic to hear from. There were many things that I learned that  I will definitely use in my classroom. I think that many people today don’t realize that there are copyright laws. I learned that just about anything can have a copyright on it. I did know, and most people should as well, that we must recognize the original creator of whatever we might be using that could be mistaken for our own.
I believe the topic on cyber - bullying is appropriate for all grade levels. I think that all students should know about it and the dangers that it could bring about. They should also know that it happens or could happen to peers around them. There is a possibility that they could be a part of it and not realize it.
If I decided that I wanted to teach my students a way of being safe on the internet, I would probably start out with having them do a survey on some of the sites that they often use.  I would also ask if their parents monitor them when they are online, do they have a specific time when they are allowed online, do their parents limit the amount of time that they are allowed to be online, are there only certain sites that they are allowed to visit, do they have an online profile on a social network such as, facebook or myspace, and what information is on that. Based on what is answered and placed in the survey this would give me an idea what they know about digital safety and it would also give me an idea on the top things that I should do a lesson on. I would also teach them more about the dangers of putting personal information online. I believe that many people don’t believe that when they put certain things online that anyone can access it. Some people may not get physically hurt  but, there might be some information that you share and someone you don’t know can automatically know so much about you.  It is quite terrifying and at the same time people need to be more aware this.  I would have them go through introductions on certain topics maybe show them a video or act out a skit that explains what are some of the things that could happen should they not follow some of these digital safety tips.
On doing this project my group and I at the beginning started researching about this topic. We found lots of information that we could share. When it came down to videos we wanted to create something different from the ones that we had seen on YouTube. The making of the video was fairly easy and the ideas came about quickly. It was quite interesting because all we used to record was the camera on a Iphone. We then used the program Imovie on the MAC to create the video and add audio. We didn’t need to spend much time meeting online. Our schedules were somewhat flexible. We used Wiggio at the start of this project but, there was so much confusion while using it. We couldn’t tell when one of our group members would be online and the messages would fill up our inboxes. Also, at times the site would lag and we would receive messages late. I’m think that maybe we didn’t give it much a chance but, it was worth a try. We stuck to using google docs only because it worked for us the first time. It so much easier to upload the information that we needed and edit any ideas on one document. We are also able to post URLs and leave messages for our group members when we couldn’t all be on at the same time. I believe that we spent most of our time meeting and discussing as a group.  I believe that this assignment was helpful in learning about digital safety. It is very important for a teacher to know the information that was shared. In the classroom students will most likely be using computers and the sharing of digital safety information would useful to them.

Amazing Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology allows so many students the ability to do different things in the classroom. It has given students a sense of independence and pride in knowing that they are able to make achievements on their own. Assistive technology allows students' dreams to come alive.
When a teacher implements the use of assistive technology there are some changes that are made in his/her classroom in order to help different students with disabilities learn. First off it would be the lesson plan. There are a few important parts of a lesson plan that includes opportunities for students with disabilities to be successful participants. These include hands on activities and activities that allow students to grasp different concepts in order to meet different goals.
There is a video that shows how different students with disabilities are using assistive technology to help them in school (Edutopia, 2005). Some students are able to complete assignments through the use of a computer. There was a student that was unable to use her hands to type on the computer. She uses a voice activated software that allows her to speak what she wishes to be typed in. There was also a student who was able to participate in a school band class by playing an instrument. He started off by playing only one note but, then had his instrument modified.  There are also students that use an interactive board that gives a student that is unable to speak, a voice. It makes it possible for the student to communicate what they are learning, how they feel, and their different needs. The interactive board can also be modified to meet a particular curriculum that the teacher may be using.
I believe that a teacher should take certain steps first in order to modify different activities to accommodate students with disabilities. One of these steps includes studying more in depth about each disability. A site that I would recommend is Do2Learn: Educational Resources for Special Needs . Do2Learn provides thousands of pages of social skills and behavioral regulation activities and guidance, learning songs and games, communication cards, academic material, and transition guides for employment and life skills (Do2Learn, 1999). The site lists the different disabilities and definitions for each based on IDEA.
Another step would be a need to look at each disability and think about the modifications that need to be made in my lesson.  I would also look up different activities for a particular disability that are used by other teacher professionals. I would learn about each student and try different methods to see what best fits their needs.
When it comes down to the evaluation of each student the test should not be the same as the one for a student without a specific disability. The test questions should be straight to the point and very specific. The student if needed could use a set of earphones to screen out distractions while taking the test. The teacher could also have a one to one test taking session with the student. The goals listed for the student should be noted if they were achieved.
There are several criteria that I would suggest using in order to assess the appropriateness of revised activities. The first would be is if the activity is appropriate for a specific disability that the student may have. The second would be accuracy of information given to the student. Another one could be creativeness in a sense that the student learns from the activity and is able to apply it to real-life situations.
I believe that assistive technology is really important in that it helps students be a lot more independent. It allows for the idea that students can achieve at a higher level with some technical assistance. On a more personal level, my nephew was tested and was found to have a learning disability. He was unable to read at his age level.  Basically, he was not able to make the connection between certain letters and its sound. He would often get frustrated and sometimes give up when given something to read. At school he was given an interactive computer program that allowed for him to listen and see each letter. It also showed him pictures associated with the letters. He would be given at least three letters to learn each day. This assistive technology has allowed him to progress dramatically. It has also brought up his self-esteem, he is proud of himself and feels motivated to learn so much more.

Thoughts

There are a million things on my mind today. The weekend is coming up and the events just keep adding on. A close friend is leaving to join her husband in Washington state. It is so sad that I haven't been able to spend much time with her. It is also my close friends birthday! What to do? What to do? I'm really going to try to please everyone....as always!!
